Gluten-Free Air Fryer Chicken Strips

Who says you can’t continue to eat your old favorites while losing weight? These Gluten-Free Air Fryer Chicken Strips are a great quick weeknight meal and they’ll hit the spot every time!

I was my moms pickiest eater. I grew up on chicken fingers, French fries, and Mac and cheese— all drown in copious amounts of ketchup! You’d think with all the chicken strips I’ve consumed throughout my life that my love for them would wan, not so. I’m a strip lover for life, even though I’ve 1/2 way outgrown my ketchup obsession.

Do you have an Air Fryer? If you don’t, you should! I held out for years and finally caved to peer pressure, not only does it save you from preheating an oven but things cook in less than 1/2 the time! I own the Instant Vortex and the Power XL Air Fryer, both of these air fryers are fabulous and come highly recommended! If this isn’t on your Christmas list already, add it now! There’s still time.

I have made this recipe with two different brands of gluten-free panko bread crumbs. Both ended up tasting delicious but resulted in slightly different outcomes. The 4C Crumbs brand of gluten-free bread crumbs gave the chicken strips more of a fluffier look and texture (see the image below) as where the Good and Gather brand were more like a nugget style breading (see the image above).

Gluten-Free Air Fryer Chicken Strips

Print Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast tenders
  • 1 large egg, cracked into a small bowl and beaten until combined
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, plus more for "frying"
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free panko bread crumbs

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl combine the chicken, egg, oil, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
  • In a second wide small bowl add the bread crumbs. Take a strip of chicken and coat it in the bread crumbs, then place it inside of your 6 quart Air Fryer basket in a single layer. Repeat this step until all strips are coated.
  • Lightly spray the strips with olive oil mist and place the basket inside of the Air Fryer housing. Air Fry at 360° for 12 minutes and flip the chicken over 1/2 way through, give another light spray of oil.
  • Remove the chicken from the Air Fryer and serve with Strip Sauce (see note)!

Notes

Note:
  1. To make strip sauce simply mix 1 part franks red hot sauce with 1 part mayo!
  2. Times may vary depending on your air fryer brand and the thickness of your breast strips. To check for done-ness insert a meat thermometer to the thickest part of the breast and make sure that its 165° F.

These were amazing and that strip sauce omg it was the best tasted just like McDonald’s creamy Buffalo sauce but without the guilt amazing

  2. I’m curious if my toaster oven with convection feature will do the same as an air fryer? Empty nesters and hubby is totally against another kitchen appliance.

    1. Hi Celia,
Thanks so much for reaching out! Unfortunately the toaster oven will not work the same as an air fryer for this recipe. You could cook it with a convection oven but the air fryer circulates air in a different way then an convection oven circulates air, so you are not going to have the same crispness. It will still work you just won’t get that fryer crispy factor to it.
