Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats

These Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats are the quick and easy breakfast you’ve always dreamed of!

On Saturday mornings Brady is in charge of making breakfast. Brady is my husband. He’s an engineer. If you have one of those around you know that they’re always coming up with new creative ways to reinvent the wheel.

Brady is not an instructions or directions type of guy so it comes as no surprise that he isn’t one for recipes either. Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats is his Saturday morning go-to. Made from years of Saturday morning experimentation, much like his Whole Grain Bread recipe, he is forever tweaking it, trying to find new ways to make it even better.

After four years though, I have to say, I don’t know how it could get much better than this.

We like to add fresh fruit. Peaches and strawberries are two of my favorite additions.

Steel cut oats have so many health benefits so this was absolutely something I wanted to keep in my diet.  Oats are full of antioxidants and soluble fiber, they help lower cholesterol, improve blood sugar control and are super filling!

This is an easy recipe to make and only has a few ingredients and makes for an easy cleanup. Overall, a win-win situation.

You will start off by collecting all of your ingredients and adding them into your Instant Pot. For this recipe you will be using a pan that fits inside your Instant Pot for “pot-in-pot” cooking. They will cook for 14 minutes and then you will be ready for a mouthful of deliciousness.

I recommend a splash of almond milk and diced strawberries for maximum yumminess. Enjoy!

  1. My daughter chowed down when I made this for breakfast! She added some almond milk and honey to make it creamier.

  2. I made this today, but at 14 minutes it was still pretty grainy, so I put it back in for 6 more. While it was tasty and edible after that, it still could have been a little creamier, and might have been better with 10 more minutes. I used a heavy Le Creuset crock (the type that it often used to store cooking utensils), because it was the only dish I have that was narrow enough to fit in pot. Do you think that might have slowed down the cooking process? Would a (thinner) glass dish have worked better? This is the first time I did pot-in-pot in my IP, so I’m not really clear on the process and what may affect the outcome.

  3. I just made this and it was just delicious! I substituted with real maple syrup as I didn’t have organic brown sugar and it worked great! This will be a new breakfast regular in our household! I’m loving all your recipes btw! I have an instant pot and you have made it much less overwhelming. This mama has 25 pounds to drop and I’m so thankful I have found Instant Loss!

  4. Can this recipe be adapted to be put into mason jars and cooked in the IP? I would like to have single servings ready to go for work days. If I can cook it ahead of time, how long do you think it would take to reheat in a microwave or instant pot?

  5. I make this every Sunday and portion it out for the week. I throw it all in the IP, don’t bother with the bowl. It doesn’t stick. Love this recipe!

    1. Do you use the same portions as in this recipe and same cook time when just throwing it in? That’s what I want to do!

    2. If I don’t have the pot to put in the IP can I just use the same ingredients and time on IP without the pot in pot method?

  6. 5 stars
Perfect! I’d share a picture, but don’t see how to attached. Used a Pyrex dish insert. Yummy results. Thank you!
