There are a lot of changes that take place when you welcome a new baby. Your breastmilk supply shouldn’t have to be cause for stress. Increasing your intake of healthy whole carbs and fats like oats, flax seed, sesame seed, and coconut palm shortening or ghee (butter without the milk protein) can help naturally boost your supply. They’re also a much healthier alternative for a snack during this time when you are trying to increase your calorie intake.

Because this recipe is jam packed full of natural ingredients you can indulge in these sweet treats without worrying about any adverse reactions to your baby. These cookies also contain oats which are high in fiber. Fiber will help get your bowels moving post baby (if you’ve had a baby you know what I am talking about). If you are worried you or your baby may have a gluten sensitivity be sure to purchase oats that say “gluten free” on the package.

I breastfed babies off and on for six years. Fueling your body properly is so important and a major key to success. I used to cringe when I looked at the ingredients in traditional lactation cookies. Sure they had ingredients that could naturally boost your supply but they also contain ingredients that might not be so helpful. I developed this recipe for that reason.

These yummy whole food cookies are the sweet treat you’ve been looking for!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup gluten-free old fashioned or steel cut oats
  • 4 tablespoons flax seed
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup coconut palm shortening, ghee, grass-fed butter, or coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup agave nectar, raw honey, or 100% pure maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup dairy-free chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 F.
  • Add the oats, flax seed, and sesame seed to a high powdered blender and blend until it reaches a flour consistency. If you do not own a high powdered blender you can use oat flour, ground flax and sesame seed instead.
  • In a food processor combine all ingredients and process until a cookie dough consistently forms. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Using a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop place dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and lightly press the balls into a 1 in thick disk.
  • Bake for 7-10 minutes or until golden.

  1. If I subbed flax eggs for the eggs, is that TOO much flax? Or should I just use something like aquafaba instead?

  2. I have been making “Not Your Mother’s Chocolate Chip Cookies” for some time and decided to try these. But I need to come up with another name for these cookies as I am 58 and certainly NOT lactating…lol.

  3. I am so excited to see these! I’m a first-time mama of a 4 month old and have been making lactation cookies from other blogs but they all have so much sugar! I will be trying these this weekend. Thank you for sharing!

  4. 5 stars
Currently 30 weeks pregnant with my first and hoping to have a good milk supply! I just made this recipe for the first time and they are pretty tasty! Thank you for this recipe!

  5. Can you freeze these or freeze the dough to cook later? I’d love to make a bunch ahead so my husband can just pop them in the oven for me post-partum!

  6. I need a breakdown of nutrition on this recipe as it is necessary to count carbs for a diabetic. Thank you

    1. Hello Rosie,
I do not include the calorie count or nutritional information on any of my recipes. All ingredients have different nutritional information so it will always vary depending on the exact ingredients (brands) you’re using. If you need to track nutritional information it’s best to calculate it for each recipe with your own ingredients into a program like MyFitness Pal because it can vary A LOT.
      Wish you all the best!

  7. Hi! I was wondering if it’s ok to add some brewer’s yeast to this recipe (4 tablespoons)? Would it change the consistency at all? Trying to add whatever beneficial ingredients to boost milk supply! Super excited to make this recipe. Thank you!

    1. Hello Marianne,
Yes you can add that and it wouldn’t change anything else. Wishing you all the best!

  8. Where do I find high-powDered blender? We only have a high-powered one. Should I risk trying this recipe?
